“Time Capsule” To Honor John Lennon

I just read that there is a time capsule project in honor of John Lennon in the works.
This is open to public submissions, and they are due by September 15th. I think there will be three capsules, and they will be stored in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They will be opened on John’s 100th birthday. I plan to do a recording of “Imagine”, and produce a video as well. The instrumentation I am shooting for is, besides flute… piano, bass, drums, tabla, sitar, and female vocals. I welcome any help for this project, financial, creative, or otherwise. This will be about John, not me.

Galway Videos Are The Best!

Sir James Galway has a lot of really great videos that are extremely educational. They cover many angles of flute playing, such as tone, articulation, finger exercises, repertoire, and more. Also, you can join his new fan club, which will be a lot of fun. And, on his web site, there are very many sound files, where you can listen to entire pieces, and the audio quality is really good. Sir James is a wonderful educator. Many musicians just focus on playing, but Sir James is very gracious with his time, and the centerpiece of this is his annual masterclass in Switzerland. I watched a video last night in which he plays numerous flutes, of different makes and materials; silver, gold, in various K counts, and even platinum. This is a great resource for a flutist looking to buy a really good flute. Let’s see, the 24 K gold flute sounded pretty nice!

Eric Sucks

I just read that Eric Clapton once said ( true or not? )… “I don’t know why people like me, I suck. I just found what sounded good to me”

Yeah Eric, you do suck. Now would you mind playing a few more sucky tunes?

I got a good title for you… “The Electric Hoover Blues”

If you use that title, Eric, I get in on the royalties, right?

Harmonica players suck… and blow!

Tone Is Everything

I was watching a bunch of you tube videos of flute players playing jazz standards the other day, and I was covering my ears.. the tone just wasn’t there. It doesn’t matter how well you play… Moto Perpetuo at double time, if the TONE is not there. Call me a snob, but I just don’t want to hear it.

Speaking of tone, I am getting my Lafin head joint tomorrow… 22 K gold of beautiful tone.

Yeehaw!

How Can I Thank You Enough?

I received word today that Sir James Galway will provide a quote for the front of my “Shadows” CD.

This is a major development, and could help immensely with CD sales and getting more high level attention.

Thank you Sir James!!!

I’m Just Taking Blue Rondo A La Turk…

And that’s all I need , by the way.

Please, oh please, if there is a god, help me find someone who I can play and record this tune with.

Thanks to Mr. Dave Brubeck, this classic masterpiece, has my heart in a big way.

I think I have about as much chance of pulling this tune off around where I live, as I do riding a cow to the moon.

Manifesting IMG Artist Management

I am shooting for the stars, in my desires to be managed by IMG Artist Management.

They represent some of the top talent this world has ever seen.

And, since I seem to have this habit of shooting for the top of the world, and whittling my way down as needed,

so why not go for the gold. Maybe I will end up with Uncle John’s Jug Band World Headquarters, if all else fails.

IMG here I come!!!

Dear Flute Santa… Better Articulation Please

The one aspect of my playing that I would most like to improve is my articulation.

I mean, it’s not that bad. But when I get going on a really fast run, I go into a full on slur factory.

I wish I could articulate on my fastest of runs, triple tongueing, double, clean as a whistle, fast as a flying teradactyl

after drinking a four shot breve. And this flutter tongueing stuff… gawow!!! It’s one thing about being an improviser… I make up

the rules. Never must I do anything I can not do. Stick me in a symphony environment, and all of a sudden, I am required to play

third register pianissimo triple tongued arpegiated little licks. Suddenly, there is trouble in paradise! haha!!!

Y’all can do things I can’t do, and maybe in the heat of a rim shot fueled samba moment, I can do something you can’t do. A big

difference…? You can do your thing again, on demand. I regularly do things that I will never be able to repeat. Perhaps kind of like

a painting… “Paint another Starry Night again, man!” (Joni Mitchell ) Once is all you get.

How fast can fingers move, anyway?

I read an article somewhere, that stated that it had been scientifically proven that honey bees could not fly.

Like no way, Jose. Their wing span to body mass ratio was just all wrong. Sorry ladies, you’ll have to walk to the next flower. It says here you just can’t fly. I guess the secret is that their hypersonic turbo billion light year per second rate of wing flappage is like, as if, as in way off the hookage. And humming birds, they flap way too fast for safety. We’ll let them off with a warning this time… next time a ticket!!! So, I sometimes ponder just how fast my fingers can go. Is there a scientific limit? I try to out fox my flute, but I can’t do it. Maybe if I buy a cheap model, and go to the beach, and get some sand into the keys. Can somebody tell me… is there a limit? I can certainly play far faster than I can think. Perhaps that is not saying very much. Not to publickly disclose ani posiball myntal limitashuns. If you meat me, that kan bee yer job.
